G'day Jerry

I've puzzled over the "tighten on/off the ground" thing for 35 odd years.
>From my MG days the story was to partly tighten off the ground to ensure the
knock-on is centred, then drop the wheel into contact with the ground before
fully tightening to save the wheel bearings. I still do it that way. The
Healey 100 manual says to loosen wheels before jacking (and that
reinstalling is the reverse). I don't like bashing away at the hub with
everything unsupported. In those days I used a Thor reversible
copper/plastic hammer.

Now I use a Dayton lead hammer - really soft and non-damaging but has to be
reshaped after each use. I made the mistake once of allowing a local MG
specialist to remove the wheels of my car to balance them. They used a "lead
alloy" hammer that they sell that is harder even than copper, which left
flats on the previously unmarked knock ons!

The only times I've seen wire wheels come off in use is either when the
spline hub shears (saw that happen to an Alfa Monza once at Silverstone) and
when a fellow MG owner decided he wanted wire wheels on his TD, but put the
hubs on the wrong sides!

Cheers
