Magnaflux is a magnetic particle inspection. A part is magnetized with a
coil, and then a fluid with metal particles in it is painted on. Where there
are cracks, the particles concentrate and make the cracks visible.
Fluorescent penetrant is a fluid that is painted on the surface and allowed to
penetrate any cracks. The fluid is cleaned off the surface, and a developer
is applied. This makes any penetrant that has gone into a crack come out
again. Under a fluorescent light, the penetrant in the cracks glows, and thus
the cracks are visible.
The two techniques are not the same, but two different ways of doing the same
thing. Mag particle inspection works only on materials that are magnetic,
like steel. Fluorescent works on steel as well as non-magnetic materials like
aluminum and plastic.
A good machine shop should be able to do both.
