A couple of months ago I installed a Pertronix electronic ignition module on my
BJ8. After the installation the engine would crank, there was spark at the
wires, but it wouldn't start. Today I got my friendly mechanic to come by and
take a look at my Healey and see if we could figure out the problem. Well we
did get it to run by checking the timing and trying to get as much advance as
possible. My mechanic said that the engine is starting at TDC when it should be
starting at 5BTDC and he could not get the additional advance by turning the
distributor or adjusting the knurled adjusting nut. His assesment is that the
timing chain has some slack and the gears on the distributor drive also have
some play and that both of them may be contributing to the lack of
adjustability. What do you all think? The engine has not been rebuilt, the
odometer is showing 79k miles but it could be more since the speedo doesn't
seem to work very well.
