....Actually, I'm from CT originally, and had cause to spend a lot of time up
in the northeastern corner -up in Winchester county, not far from Lime Rock.
In the town of Winsted, there is a lake called Highland lake. There is a
really steep climb, up from town to the lake and a really great 6 mile circuit
that hugs the shoreline of the lake's 3 bays. The road is somewhat narrow, but
great fun. Haven't been back with the Healey, but I used to whip around the
lake in my early MGBGT, with fat tires... Makes me grin just thinking about
it. Plusses- great views of the lake, racing boats, and scantily clad water
skiers. Minus- You have to remember the spillway at the southern end which
goes over the roadway (easily avoided), otherwise, you get an unexpected
car-wash.

Aha. I'm from Connecticut. So clearly a lot of the draw of PCH is that it's
different from the screamin' back roads of New England that we take for
granted.
Hey, on that basis there's a little 1.5 mile country lane up in Lakeville,
CT. that ain't so bad. 'Course at the end of the 1.5 miles you're back where
you started, but do that 10 to 15 times and it's a nice drive through the
countryside! And everyone's courteous enough to all be going in the same
direction!

I do think previous threads did point out the gawker drawback, But having
been
a few places, I'd put the scenery in the top 7 or eight... I would grant
you
however, that if you really want to flog the car down the road, there are
a
lot better places.
Well, at least you are a native.... so maybe the Nomex suit will be
enough....

This is blasphemy, but except for a couple of stretches (Marin to Bodega
Bay,
around Big Sur) I think the PCH is overrated. Half the view is (flat)
water,
and you're almost always stuck behind some terrified and/or rubbernecking
tourist. There are a few inland roads off the PCH that are nice, however.
Once we were travelling through there, and one of the small towns on the
route (forget the name) asked us to be in their parade. Couple people
came
up and told us they were voting for us for "Best in Show." That was fun.
The Columbia River Gorge, OTOH, has some varied and interesting
scenery.
