I don't know whether or not your engine is out. We're doing an engine
rebuild on a BJ8 and the owner wanted the engine bay cleaned up while it's
accessible. I took out everything I could remove then I used a putty knife
and sprayed small areas at a time with a hand sprayer containing varsol.
Once the thick stuff was off I just followed up with more varsol on a cloth.
I hand sanded the underlying paint, masked components that I didn't want
painted and sprayed the engine bay with body colour. Labour intensive but if
you're going to do it yourself it doesn't matter - the owner's time isn't
worth anything is it?
