And I had the same problem, too, when I rebuilt my gearbox. There was no
evidence of any kind of pad in the recesses of the bellhousing for the shifter
rods, and I didn't know there should be. When I reassembled the box and moved
the shift lever, it locked up in first. I opened it up again and discovered
that the detent balls and springs in the gear hub had got loose because the
sliding part of the gear went too far forward. After reassembling a second
time and testing, I could see the problem was that the rods were moving too
far forward. Putting a pad cut from linoleum into the shifter rod recesses
fixed it.

I had this this problem a few years ago. The advise I got from the Nocks
was to check and see if there was a 'pad' in the recess in the bell housing
where the shifting rods go. There wasn't. I inserted a piece of gasket
material in the bottom of the hole and the problem went away. The low gear
rod was going too far forward and locking up the gear.
