Bob,
put the drift on the threaded end..better yet see if your local bicycle
store has a cotter press for removing it, that way it can probably be
reused. They are pretty soft and banging on it will usually deform the
threads..a small co-clamp will probably work ok too. The bike stores should
have an assortment of cotter sizes that will fit or can be modified to fit.
