Best way I've found is to put the thing in a press with the axles parallel to
the press and push gently down on the banjo. this springs the case lengthwise
and you can pull the carrier right out. Nice for shimming too--just release
tension to check, retension to change a shim.

Sure. I've taken quite a few apart and have had to use a case
spreader tool only once or twice. The odds are that you can remove
the diff without it. You take off the rear cover and turn the diff
carrier so that the open sides of the casting are on the top and
bottom, as viewed from the rear of the car. Then you take two long
screw drivers or similar pry bars, stick the ends into the cavities
of the carrier, and pry it right straight out. You can usually move
it far enough that you can then get your fingers in there and lift it
the rest of the way out.
