I have been debating the merits of blocking off my oil filter by-pass. With my
oil filter head oil cooler sandwich plate the oil out of the filter is routed
thru the head of the filter by-pass retainer (large bolt head at the front of
the filter head). An AN fitting is welded to the top of the retainer to send
oil to the coolers. This means that all of the oil must pass thru the by-pass
spring, which can not be good for flow.
In a race car where the oil filter is changed fairly frequently is the by-pass
even needed? If that much stuff clogs the filter I would have big enough
problems as it was, before the reduced flow thru the filter was an issue. I
guess the other alternative if a by-pass is needed would be to use an oil
filter with a built in by-pass.
Have I got this all wrong? Has anyone else blocked the by-pass?
