I would think the optimum would be a short first as it came with the stock 
gearbox, than a long 2nd and a 3rd that fit's between 4th and 2nd.

I have on several tracks the problem, that the 2nd is too short and the 3rd is 
too long. The same happends often to the 3rd. Too short, 4th is too long.
The only problem is to find those gears for the 2nd and 3rd.
