Bill is on the correct path. A good close ratio and a selection of differentials wilth different ratios is the simplest and most bullet proof choice. For the tractor cars, a 3.7, a 4.1 and a 4.5 along with a couple different tire diameters will cover most of the bases. Remembering to never shift going up a hill, shifting on the down side of a hill and the fact that you lose a car length for every gear change will do more than a 7 speed OD/combo in a car with wrong diff gearing for a given track.
