Andy, Greg,
Andy why is the megasquirt better than the SDS system? Just cause
its cheaper? I spent a lot of yesterday on the SDS website and they have a
ton of great diy info. The SDS is a batch fired system where they fire half
at once. Is the megasquirt the same way? Or does it really fire all 4
injectors at the same time.
SDS and megasquirt will not work with a solex style system with
individual throttle bodies-not enough of a vacuum signal. In fact it says
just this on the SDS site.
If I were going to do this I would use a single throttle body off of
a 4.6l ford engine (with tps) and make my own log style intake manifold.
You don't need to use the solex intake at all. There is a how-to on the SDS
site. You could completely remove all the solex stuff for safe keeping and
try out the efi and then switch back...well besides the efi fuel pump your
going to need.
Something like this could be just the ticket for my switchable
supercharger I got gathering dust in my garage......
The SDS website is www.sdsefi.com

You could use the carbs as throttle bodies but there are better performing
alternatives. I suggest using an OEM throttle body from a junkyard. It
will already be set up with a throttle position sensor. You would have to
make a plenum to mount the throttle body and it would bolt to the SU or
Solex manifold. I have considered that a piece of 4" square tubing could
be used for the plenum. The Jenvey throttle bodies would be simpler because
they are a direct replacement for an SU carb. They also can be manufactured
with one or two fuel injector ports eliminating the need for a bung in the
manifold. I guess it all depends on how much time and money you want to
spend. The great thing about having a megasquirt is that you can go the the
dyno and only need a laptop to tune the car. If it is a little lean at 2000
rpms all you have to do is adjust the fuel map. There is no fiddling with
needles and jets and no getting hour hands dirty. For the price there is
nothing that can beat it.
Later,
Andy
