Ah, to gunk or not to gunk. That's a question that always gets some strong
opinions from people.

There are some valid reasons not to just smear on a bunch of silicone gasket
sealer like you're icing a cake, which is what some people do. That's a bad
idea. The excess sealant can get into the cooling system and plug up tubes
in the radiator. Some people claim it can also cause problems in the
lubrication system, but I think it wouldn't make it through the filter.

But I always use a very thin coating of gasket sealer. I used to use the
typical red silicone sealant, but lately I've switched to Hylomar (on the
recommendation of a friend). It's always worked for me and I've never
plugged up a radiator.
