I think they over-engineered the whole motor (I'm not complaining, mind
you). Check the size of the valves. Some of you are familiar with the "FIA"
head for the L-series engine and it's gigantic valves and ports. Years ago I
found out that the FIA valves used the same valve stem diameter as the U20
and, since they were titanium intakes and stainless-steel sodium-filled
exhausts, thought maybe I could hog out the ports and use them in a U20.
It turned out that the stock U20 valves are 1 mm LARGER diameter than the
FIA valves!
Also, the U20 crank and rods are beefier than a small-block Chevy.
