Dad taught me to drive in a 1963 Karmann Ghia convertible with a 4 speed,
on an ice covered parking lot in January. Did I mention the car had NO
heater at all?! But, it was a great way to learn; no clutch spinning, tire
burning launches (as if that VW had the horses!) and no stalling out every
other try.
Once I got the hang of getting that Gia rolling, I got to drive around the
snow filled lanes in the lot. Then Dad started yanking the emergency brake
in the middle of a corner, just to make the car slide. Great training for
driving NE Ohio's winter roads.
I miss Dad, but I do NOT miss driving that frozen rust bucket. I sold it
before I turned 16 for $50 more than I paid for it after flogging it around
for a few months.
