I adjusted the valves on my '69 2000 on the weekend in hopes of fixing
a pretty loud valve-train noise. After completion, I ran the motor to
revel in my nice quiet engine and was dismayed to realize that the
noise doesn't seem to be adjustment related. The rockers seem to
be quieter now (set as best I could as everything cooled while I worked,
making the 'hot' specs pretty invalid) - less 'tick', but it now makes it
easier to hear the other noise I had hoped to fix. The noise is a harder
tick. Sorry to try to describe sounds by e-mail, but it's kind of like the
sound of an old VW van engine. It's severe enough that I'm concerned
that I could be doing serious damage. Any ideas what I could be
dealing with here? Could a valve be stuck partly closed?
Side-note that *may* be of interest - I can see a little smoke coming
from the manifold area (back-half) that I believe is an exhaust leak.
Hard to tell with the 2 manifolds interlocked and the carbs covering a
large area.... The sound I hear seems to be more metal-like, but
might this be the source?
