Mike,
I experimented with this question for a long time and
finally decided to split the difference with a feeler gauge
that is about in the middle or a little on the loose side of
the range and make it a snug fit. Still able to pull it out,
but not really free. When you put the smaller thickness
gauge in the feel seems pretty good and I never burnt a
valve following this theory.
