Chris,
You should plug your bolt holes with a bolt or plugs.
Sandblasting will round off the threads if shot right on them.
Use Play sand. You can get it at Home Depot. Its vary fine. Make sure it is dry
before putting it through your blaster. Most important, buy a sifter from
Eastwood to get all the bigger chunks out. This will save you the headache of
declogging your nozzle every 5 minutes. Speaking of nozzles, depending on your
compressors CFM, choosing the right size will make things go faster. A
13/64"nozzle will use around 7 CFM @ 80 psi, while a 1/4" nozzle will use
around 15 CFM @ 80 psi. The larger the nozzle means more sand coming out and
more aggressive blasting. But if your compressor cant handle that much, the
sand will come out thick and slow. You can borrow someone else's compressor and
connect it to yours with a T fitting. This will increase your CFM. Expect to go
through 2 or 3 nozzles to do a frame. In order of nozzle durability is. Steel,
Ceramic, Carbide. Carbide being the longest lasting and most expensive. But one
carbide nozzle will do the whole frame and more. I believe stripping the frame
by sandblasting is the best way to go. The sand will get in every nook and
crannie and the surface is ready for primer. No need for self etching, the
surface is already etched by the sand. Lay out a large tarp to blast on. you
can sweep up or shop vac up the sand and put it through the sifter to use
again. IMPORTANT!! GET A GOOD CARTRIDGE BREATHER. A simple cloth one will not
do. Breathing in the dust from sandblasting is vary dangerous.
Good luck
Jeff E.
