I went to a sewing/materials store, and bought a 6-ft wide roll of
cloth-backed foam. It's 1/4" thick and has a nice comfortable feel under the
carpets. I used double-sided carpet tape to secure it to the floor and
carpets, after a stripping and rust-converting of the floor. The foam cost
me about $24 total.
