Any time you hear noise, it is doing damage and should be attended to 
IMMEDIATELY! Shim the
tensioner. It's easy.

You can easily change the cam and rockers without tearing the engine apart. The 
chains, on the other
hand, require major disassembly. If the cam lobes are starting to show pitting, 
it means that the
surface hardening of the lobes has worn through. Wear will now accelerate and 
start to eat up the
rockers, too. If you can afford to switch to the later-style rockers, it would 
be a good idea.
