I recently acquired a '70, 1600 and just finished going through and doing a
complete go through and tune-up (including replacing the nozzles and needles
on the carb). The last thing I am attempting to do is set the fuel mixture.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to dial this in correctly?
Right now I have the idle adjusting nuts backed off about one and a half
turns. When the front or rear lifting pins are raised the full amount
(about 1/2") the engine continues to run (roughly) -supposedly indicating a
sufficiently rich mixture. When they are raised around 1/32", the idle
immediately drops - indicating a supposedly lean mixture. I had been
running at 2 full turns out, but my plugs indicated this was too rich, and
the car definitely idles better at the 1-1/2 setting. Any suggestions on
reliable methods of dialing mixture in?
