Lee,
Are you planning on racing? The cam/jackshaft has been known to break at
the distributor/oil pump shaft (usually just in front or aft of the gear)
but only when you're running some serious revs, maybe with a shimmed oil
pump putting out >70 psi, with beefed up springs and high lift cam and
maybe you're still using the mechanical tach.

Now, you can radius the ridge around the base of the gear on the
cam/jackshaft. You could also go to a steel cam (rather than cast iron)
[use a bronze distributor gear] or consider going with an electronic tach
or distributor-less ignition to lessen the "drag" on the cam/jackshaft.

The gear snapping off at the front is something I've only heard of for the
2000 and Tom has already covered that.

But these are things only to concern a serious road racer. Your mileage may
vary, but I've not heard of this happening in a street car. However, if
you've got your cam in hand, have it magnifluxed in those two areas for
peace of mind.
