Mike-
I had a clicking noise coming from my Spitfire's rear end. I know you have a
GT6, but a Spitfire is of course similar, so maybe this story will help. The
clicking sound was quite noticable, and it changed and was often loudest when
I cornered. I thought at first it was U-joints, but it turned out to be the
differential. Mountjoy's Autoshop of Hyattsville, MD, diagnosed my problem
and rebuilt my diff. My thrust washers were toast and my spider gears were
not so hot. The Spitfire, and I believe the GT6 as well, use bakelite thrust
washers. Bakelite is a very old material invented in the late 1800's; it's
like a hard plastic. One of my thrust washers was wafer-thin, and the other
one was GONE. Tim Mountjoy mixed and matched spiders from the best of four
used diffs and put my diff back together with brass thrust washers and proper
clearancing. Now the diff works great!
By the way, my half shafts are "pinned" and do not "float" out by the hub
carrier. Swing axle GT6s are the same (they're pinned), and I believe the
rotoflex GT6s are too. Good luck with solving the problem.
