No fair. You need to tell us which of the many XJ6 models it was. Ah well.
1> loose electrical connection. This would include power feeds, grounds,
even a loose condenser screw.
2> Carb'd cars, a weak fuel pump. Foward accel is working against fuel flow;
Reverse is working with it.
3> Injected cars, someone put a tennis ball in the air filter. Going forward,
the ball will roll back and block the air flow meter inlet.
