The Service Manual for the Jaguar Automatic Transmission calls for the
Band Adjusting Tool J.4285 to be screwed into the pressure take-off hole
when conducting brake band adjustments.
I don't have Tool J.4285 and wouldn't know where to start looking for one
even if I thought I could afford to buy one. But I have noted that a number
of simular Borg-Warner transmissions call for tightening the band
adjustment pin to a specified torque and then backing the pin off a
specified number of turns.
Unfortunatly, the Jaguar Manual does not specify this procedure as an
option. But I discovered that by putting the car on jack stands with the
engine at idle and the selector in 'D', 'L' or 'R' a satisfactory adjustment
could be made by tightening the corresponding band adjustment pin until the
prop shaft starts to rotate and then back the pin off a turn or two.
Any comments on brake band adjustment would be welcome!
BTW, this is a '66 3.8 'S' Type here and if anyone knows where I might
find a rear oil pump <cheap!>, I'd be happy to hear from you.
Cheers, Emm
