It looks like the saga is nearing an end. Thanks to all who offered advice
and support.
To recap, I got in touch with the guy it was last titled too, aand he agreed
to help me (Jim). Jim signedsome papers asking Mass. DMV for a duplicate title
for the Spit. Note, this is after calling them and they told us to apply for
a duplicate title. Mass. DMV then returned the check and the papers saying
that because the Jim had bought the car prior to 1990 it did not require a title
This of course made me mildy angry and I felt like calling them and telling them
what I thought of the State of Mass. and it's vehicle licensing dept....but
what for...there hand picked to be flame proof and dumb.
Actually, for fun and amusement here is an exact copy of the letter:

Dear applicant,
Effective Nov 26, 1990, Mass. General Laws Ch. 90D, Sect. 2 were amended.
Passenger vehicles 10 or more years older are NO LONGER EXEMPT from the title
law (caps. are my own).
*on reading this I thought oh buggery*
All passenger vehicles purchased afetr nov 26, 1990 are required to be titled
by the new owner within 10 days of purchase.
Since you (Jim) purchased the vehicle prior to nov 26 1990, it is exempt from
the title law.

Now, I can't understand the first paragraph in relation to the 3rd paragraph..
perhaps someone can enlighten me?
Anyway, I'd had enough so I took all the paperwork I had accumalated
to the Illinois DMV (who beforehand had said there was NO WAY they would
give a title to car wthout a Mass. title). I spoke to a different women this
time
who glanced at the paperwork and said 'sign here, you'll get your title
in a couple of months, then you can get your plates, thats $13 plus $25 tax'.
So, hopefullya title will be on its way to me in the near future!
