You must be running too hot. Turn down the current and
see if you can still get a solid bead. I'm learning to
use my new MIG welder, and that was the solution to the
"top piece burns away" problem...

The MIG is great - very little warping in the workpieces,
almost no splatter, very adjustable to get the right
welding action.
