This might be long, so go on to the next article if you don't care.
My saga begins in June 86. I bought a 67 Alpine from some bonehead in
Va Beach. He rebuilt the carbs a week before I bought it.(Foreshadowing
of future doom)
I trailered it up to D.C. as I didn't have plates yet. Four days after
I get the car, (still without plates or insurance) I enter it in a LBC
show 10 mi away. I switch the plates from my GTI and start to head to
the show. About 2 mi from home, the car starts to run like crap. I pull
into a gas station seing smoke coming from under the bonnet! I open
it up to see fuel gushing from the vent hole onto the exhaust manifold!
I went thru three dead fire extinguishers at the station and then a
bucket of water to put out the blaze. I bought a halon extinguisher
that afternoon.
There was only minor damage, I replaced all the burnt parts with stuff
from my first Alpine (totalled-another story).
Ayear later I bought a set of Webers from a guy at a flea market. I
bolted 'em on and it ran OK. Three months later, I cracked a piston
on one of the nuts that "was" holding the air cleaner on. I tore the
engine down on July 4th 1987. First, I was just gonna put 4 pistons
in and go. Then.....
Mod1 4 pistons
Mod2 4 pistons and new bearings for the bottom end
Mod3 " " +valve job
Mod4 above+Isky cam
Mod5 above+High compression pistons
Mod6 above+proffesional balancing+tubular headers
Now, I have a hot engine with an Isky cam, stiffer valve springs, tubular
chrome-moly rods, lightened lifters, tubular exhaust, Webers, and a filthy
engine bay.
Mod6 Repaint engine bay
Now allthis goes in and the Webers that I have 42 DCOE's are not the
correct model for the car. I sold 'em to John Hoan (sp?) from this net
and bought 40's. I had to get a shorter master cyl and grind some alum.
off the carbs to get 'em to fit, but........
Last night it started VVVVVVRRRRRROOOOOOOMMMMM
