Richard, Paul...I was just having this problem with my XJ6 and 
traced it down to a "pressure relief" valve pre the carbon
canister.  The XJS has the same fuel vapour recovery system
does it not?  I don't think the tanks are supposed to pressurise
that much (according to all the Jag mechanics I talked to)
Vapour from the tanks is supposed to make it's way to the 
carbon canister after going through a vapour separator.  To quote
the manual "when the car is parked the vapour is absorbed by the
activated charcoal in the canister and desorbed when the engine
is running" or words to that effect.  Yes the fuel vapour system is
closed but it should end up in the intake manifold not your boot/car.

See my article in this group on "XJ6's next trick, was Jaguar
on Holiday" I solved my problem you may be able to do the same..
In order of preference check...A) Pressure relief Valve, B)Canister
C) Vapour Separator (where is this in the XJS? the rear pillar
like the XJ6?)
