        How would adding ceramic tape make the cockpit cooler?

By keeping the heat inside the exhaust system up until the point that
the exhaust pipes have passed the cockpit. Much of the heat in the
cockpit is radiating from the pipes (and the rest is radiating from the
engine); by not allowing it to escape the pipe until past the cockpit,
the rear of the car gets warmer, but the engine compartment stays cool(er).
