My '54 MG TD is a hostage in a local repair shop. Just because all the
tires are about 25 years old and all cracked and weathered, they won't
even take it out for test drives without new tires. This I could live
with--I believe in tires--and I can even afford tires--but I can't find
any! What I last bought was Michelin X 155-15 and that size seems to be
unobtainable locally, and I can't see it in Car & Driver tire ads either.
I called a big tire shipper in Indiana (The Tire Rack). The guy had
heard of MG TD's but had no listing for cars that old, and no advice.
What size tires will fit on an MG TD? I want to keep unsprung weight
low but I imagine a wider profile tire would assist cornering and braking
(not that they need assistance). But if I get too large a tire, I'll
have a big problem with rubbing against the wheel well. What are other
people using? What can you recommend?
