That's interesting. I think the person who said he also didn't have was
about serial number #800. I'm about #200. Perhaps there is a significant
run of cars that didn't.

My '74 does have steel pans under the seats. I'm not the original owner so
I don't know if they're original but since the car has only 3,800 miles, I
suspect they are.

There are no steel supports under the fiberglass where the seats go. There
are only steel beams here and their under the passenger/cargo compartment.
Directly under the seats, the fiberglass is 'undercoated' which implies that
there was nothing between it and the road, even as the car came off the
assembly line. The foot rest area is seriously cracking--my intent was to
add fiberglass/resin to reinforce that. If you're saying a 1974 should also
have steel pans under the seats, then I am indeed missing them (perhaps '74
owning newsgrouper can say he has them and I should too). That would seem
safer.
As for the rust, the compartments which allow water to run from the firewall
down through tubes appear to have done the job on the passenger side. The
driver's side has or soon will rust through (I could probably push a
screwdriver thru it but was going to wait and see what was left after media
blasting). This compartment is forward of the A-pillar intersection so it
does not appear to be structural -- may still be a good candidate for a
patch.
