It's more correctly "Threw a Rod"... It refers to the connecting rod and
how when it snaps it tends to blow out the side of the block and "throw"
parts everywhere...

I was struck by the humor of imagining how many people blow up the
engine at the track, tow the car to the local grocery store, then call
the dealer for warranty service 'cuz the engine "split a rod" while
going to the market.
Just out of curiousity, does the phrase "split a rod" mean a pushrod or
a piston rod? Now that I longer have a rotary I need to know these
things.
