Same may be true for API motor oils. Some of the later standards are more
focused on "energy conservation" and reduced emissions, or catalytic converter
friendly additives, instead of say, resistance to corrosion and
high pressure protection.
"Focused"? Perhaps - But at no point are the basic values compromised, I.E.
High pressure and corrosion resistance are always better on the later API spec.
(at least, within the gas engine spec) Not true for Gear oils, as mentioned!
The GL's are, indeed, for different applications. -Seth
