Well, I did win a lot of autocross trophies with cut springs on my SAAB. Of
course, that was in the old days. The SAAB factory competition book in
those days told us how many coils to cut for racing. I cut half that many
for autocross.

Right about that time, SCCA was thinking about making up rules for something
called "Solo II". Their first take for stock class was to allow only stock
suspension but allow wider wheels. I thought that was a bad idea, making
cars more rollover-prone. I preferred allowing suspension mods and
stock-size wheels, as were the rules in my part of the Frozen North. SPORTS
CAR gave me a full page to make my case. I was only partially successful,
and the rest is history. :-)

The official scorekeeper will please note that times have changed. The
springs in the TR4 are stock and the springs in the Lotus are Eibach.
