Who said _anything_ about stock? I was referring to highly modified cars. This
was to point out that "modern" enthusiast modifications like engine swaps have
been going on since the '50s.
In any case, most of the modified European cars with which I was familiar in
the early 70s were never taken to the drag strip. I have no idea what kind of
quarter mile times my buddy's Alpina 2002 (with some additional work by Miller
and Norburn) would turn, but I did see it outdrag big-motor American hot rods
from light to light on a number of occasions.
