I'm aware of the conventional (and well-founded) wisdom that it's risky
to put race rubber on a tall, stock car such as a Golf, especially if
the suspension is worn out, etc.

I'm running a (basically) stock-suspended 4-cylinder Fiero with year-old
OEM shocks. Everything appears to be tight, and the car has an
aftermarket rear bar in addition to the stock front bar. The rock-hard
dime-store tires the previous owner put on the car are finally wearing
out, so I'm tire shopping.

Considering all this, what does the list think about using race rubber
on this car without further suspension upgrades? From the safety
standpoint only, should I spend my money first on tires or shocks?

I don't put on a lot of miles on the car (about 7,000 last year, daily
driving to work and back,) so I'm considering just driving on some R
tires all the time.

I'm also thinking of some good high-performance tires, since I'm only a
casual competitor, and the thought of changing tires every event is an
annoying one. I'm at the point where I don't even like adjusting tire
pressures. ;^)

Talk amongst yourselves.

Thanks.
