A little trick I picked up from the BMW crowd
If you have 3 season directional tires designed to push water away reverse
The direction they will "grab the snow on acceleration and push it away
during braking
This and lower the pressure to the teens for added grip.
Not a very elegant solution but it really does work in a pinch
(You should see the fishtails of snow it creates on the Z-pig)
Keep in mind 3 season tires will harden slightly during intense winter use
Don't ask me why. But I think it has something to do with heat cycling
But if you are starting with H rated you should be ok, I had a set of SP8000
that
Went from Z rated to Rocks over one winter

(Standard disclaimer)
As always I do not condone running 3 season tires as winter tires
And this can become quite dicey as always drive with your head
Not above it. This suggestion is for "in a pinch"
(Like, "I'm late for work and all I have to drive on are these tires")
Situations, not Regular snow uses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, the problem is that any more we only get one or two brief snows here
in Kansas City and I could probably deal with even bald R tires for that
short of a duration. 3 season tires are my biggest need with some
capability in the snow. If the snow lasts any length of time I usually
carry sand bags, a shovel, thick blankets, a 4 pack of Northern tissue paper
and a box of Cheerios. ;^)
So, I don't really need a set of steelies and true snow/ice tires. (Knock
on wood.) But whatever tires I do get need to be able to at least go slowly
through some snow.
