They are fun to build and drive and watch.  If you are only interested in
close racing with de facto limits on spending, buy a stock or CM car.  There
are AM drivers who love it even though they know they will never be national
champs.  The entertainment value of these cars for both participants and
spectators way more important than their mere numbers.
