A gated course is one that's defined by a series of gates (or gates and
boxes), similar to a downhill slalom course in skiing. As opposed to a
course completely outlined with cones (aka a minature road course, or MRC).
I've seen a some gated courses with partial chalk outlines to define
sections -- the blank spots were the obvious connecting straights.
Conversely, there's no requirement to outline an MRC with chalk.
