The plastic tube probably can be replaced by almost anything similar,
since most shielding gases are inert or mildly reactive (CO2), and this
tube carries only enough pressure to move the gas to the valve in the
machine if you have a flowmeter. However, if you are using a regulator,
rather than a flowmeter, pressure might be an issue, and you can waste a
lot of gas with an undetected leaky hose.
