Thanks to everyone who has replied. Yesterday I
loosened the bolts on the starter and slid it out to
make sure it wasn't binding in the ring gear. When I
tightened the bolts back down I added a nice big ground
from one of the two bolts and ran it up to the strut
that holds the heater valve. Nothing. So I buttoned the
car back up and thought about it overnight.

It isn't the bendex gear. It isn't a ground from the
starter. I used a meter to make sure I was getting
power to the starter.

One thing I haven't done is simply turn on the lights to
see if I have a good ground to the battery. I'll be
embarrassed (but happy) if it is that. The next has to
be the brushes not making proper contact. So back under
the car I go tonight. This is my everyday car so I have
to get it going.

Again thanks! Many good ideas.
