Larry,

        It's very hard to check the condition when it assembled (especially the
ball bearings), but with the top cover removed, you might be able to see
the condition of the gear dogs of gears 2nd, 3rd and 4th and the wear on
the shifting forks. If the syncros are worn, the gear dogs will look
pretty mangled especially 2nd and 3rd. You probably need to clean the
oil off with some kerosene and a brush to see them clearly. You may have
a problem getting oil into the tranny, because the dipstick/oil filler
is on top and not on the side like the later models.
