The May issue of Practical Classics has a decent article on overdrives,
part of their "How to Tell if It's Worn" series.
One point to note is that the cone clutch can be fouled, and slip,
either because of oil that is too slippery or clutch material that isn't
cut to bleed away the oil that bathes the whole mechanism. Black oil and
bits in the filter screen will indicate this.
