I've had the Petronix unit in my Series V for probably four or five years now -
roughly 25,000 miles of city, highway and the occasional autocross. Haven't
had to touch it once, after an easy one+ hour installation. The main
noticeable benefit is that it eliminated the random pinging I used to get under
load. If it ever does go bad, I carry a set of points and the old holddown
screw to quickly convert it back.

does not sound good. One thing about the old distributors, components are
cheap and can be replaced in a few minutes, even if they require a lot of
attention.....
