It's true what they say about getting the rear hubs off the axle.
Yesterday in my work to move from wire wheels to regular, I started the
process of removing the hubs.
I started by drilling out an old spinner and placing a bolt through the
center and tightening it against the axle. Using my torque wrench and
impact wrench, I managed after about and hour and a half to pull the center
of the spinner out.
Okay, now what. Slide hammer. I borrowed a slide hammer and spent another
hour pounding away with the slide. That got me sore elbow and shoulder.
Then my friend came over and we chained up a 4 ton hydraulic press.
Pressed it to the max, pounded and pounded with slide hammer. Let it sit
for two hours.
Okay, now the hubs are still on the axles and they are in the trunk of my
car going to the machine shop tomorrow.
That was fun.
By the way, the splines on the axle are different between the Series I and
Series IV or V. The Series I axle splines are more course.
