Less surprisingly, we had many German and Italian POW's in the UK. They were
mostly put to work (paid) on the land, alongside the womens's land-army,
which my mother was a member of.

The interesting part of the story was that that were not interned, as such,
and allowed to come and go from their hostels freely.

The thinking at the time apparently was 'where could they go?, unless they
feel like swimming back to mainland Europe'. For the most part they professed
to happy to be away from the fighting, and relatively safe in England.
