Thanks to all that responded so quickly with great suggestions. It
looks like the culprit was the by-pass valves. I took them off and
blocked them with duct tape. After fiddling with the idle and timing,
the car will now hold idle at whatever I set the screws at (I have it
set at about 900rpm's now). Dieseling has stopped and the car will
start much quicker.
I realize that blocking the by-pass valves is not recommended for a
couple of reasons, but does anyone have their's blocked? What is the
effect and how did you block them?
