I am thinking that your diff mounts are in the process of failing. The
crack that was repaired may well be fine, but other things besides the
brackets can and do fail. The broken bracket was symptomatic of a broader
failure that is in progress.
The mounting pins can and do pull out of the frame, and both the front
and rear mounts can fail (although the front ones are far and away the most
common failure).
I reinforced the front mounts when I did my frame off, but now I am
wishing I had reinforced the back ones too. No problems, but the engine has
been warmed over, and I worry that the back ones might not last especially
when I grab rubber in third gear. Hah!
I recommend a thorough inspection and even if they pass, get them
reinforced while you are at it. Hire one of those mobile welding guys to
install a kit from TRF, or make your own.

I have been getting an intermittent cracking sound coming from the
rear end of my '74 TR6. The differential was rebuilt a few years ago
when I replaced the U-joints.
When the differential was out I discovered a cracked mounting
bracket (forward right) that was welded back but not reinforced.
Visual inspection shows the welded bracket appears to be
holding together.
What would be the most likely cause of a cracking sound? It does
it sometimes when just backing out of the garage or even turning the
corner at 15 mph.
It does not do it all the time. Last weekend I drove it approx 50 miles
and it only made that sound once or twice.
