That rod serves to keep the window channels from spreading at the bottom when rolling the glass down. I quelled the rattle it makes by gluing some foam rubber (actually a piece of an old sponge) on the back of the door panel so it presses against the rod, thereby keeping it from rattling. Yes, it's hillbilly fix, but it does work.
